dinning table politics

SO I’ve missed London Design Festival 2009.
Exhibition on my dinning table “dinning table politics” The discussion of politics whilst eating.
I made the choice not to show yet another object during London Design Festival 2009.

This is what I did instead.
I unscrewed the table top of my second hand dinning table, turned it over and attached a wooden bar.
I then pasted a poster I had designed to the front of the table top.
I took this and lent it against several cafe and restaurant walls in Portsmouth.
Finally I returned the table top home and back to its legs so that I could eat dinner from it.
The poster designs intentionally use the visual language of protest posters.
The words of my causes become decorative to adorn dinner parties rather than marches.
My dichotomy between creativity, fashion, function, ethics, ideology and reality are laid out.
What is it to be a contemporary designer in 2009.
How important is the colour of the china, the pattern of the table cloth or the shape of the chair?
But life without imagination is life without hope.

Exhibition starts 28th September at www.flickr.com/bykarenryan
